Netflix and Exercise With DIY Cycflix System

You’ve heard the phrase “no pain, no gain.” Well, how about “Cycle faster, or forget about binge-watching the latest season of Orange Is the New Black“?

Less than catchy, I know. But that’s the idea behind Ronan Byrne’s DIY pedal-powered home entertainment system Cycflix.

The project requires a stationary bike, Arduino, and Netflix account: Hook up the microcontroller to the exercise machine to control streaming based on how hard you’re working out; motivation is propelled by cliffhangers and FOMO.

Follow Byrne’s instructions to get set up, then dictate your exercise routine, pick a TV show or movie, and start cycling. Once you reach your intended speed, the program begins playing; drop below that pace for too long, and it automatically pauses.

“The main gist [is that] Firefox will open and play Netflix and monitor your speed for the workout routine you designed,” Byrne wrote in his online directions. “If you are going below the speed for too long, Netflix will be paused until you get back up to speed.”

Using another streaming service, like Amazon Video or Hulu, takes only “a few changes,” the Dublin Institute of Technology student said.

Most people equate Netflix with dropping crumbs between couch cushions, general idleness, and, if you’re lucky, the faint sense that you should be doing something more productive.

Engineer Byrne, however, hopes Cycflix can help encourage more people to get behind the handlebars and tain.

“Right now it has enough functionality for me,” Byrne said. “After all, it was to help me learn some Python [programming language] and maybe (a big maybe) get me using the exercise bike.”

Netflix had a similar idea in March, when it introduced the DIY personal trainer—its fourth “Make It” project. Get “that extra push” on the treadmill or cross-trainer with motivation from your favorite Netflix characters.

Do you need a drill sergeant like Terry Crews (Ultimate Beastmaster), “Red” Reznikov (OINTB), or Frank Underwood (House of Cards)? Perhaps you work better under pressure from Queen Elizabeth (The Crown)? Or will the optimism of Kimmy Schmidt (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) and Stephanie Tanner (Fuller House) get you to the finish line?

You (or a tech-savvy friend) will need a background in building electronics and coding; check Netflix’s detailed bill of materials before getting started.
